A deepfake impersonation scam targeted a business professional in Singapore. Fraudsters posing as senior government officials invited the victim to a Zoom video conference that appeared to involve Prime Minister Lawrence Wong and other officials, with the appearances created using deepfake AI technology. Before the call the victim received a WhatsApp message and an email requesting urgent funding assistance, and was asked to sign a non-disclosure agreement. After the meeting, the victim transferred at least S$4.9 million through a series of transactions to a corporate bank account supplied by the scammers. The victim later grew suspicious, contacted the official concerned and discovered the scam. Police issued an advisory and later obtained footage of the fabricated meeting, observing signs of deepfake manipulation.
