Fraudsters posing as senior government officials invited the victim to a Zoom video conference that appeared to involve Prime Minister Lawrence Wong and other officials, with the appearances created using deepfake AI technology. Before the call the victim received a WhatsApp message and an email requesting urgent funding assistance, and was asked to sign a non-disclosure agreement. After the meeting, the victim transferred at least S$4.9 million through a series of transactions to a corporate bank account supplied by the scammers. The victim later grew suspicious, contacted the official concerned and discovered the scam. Police issued an advisory and later obtained footage of the fabricated meeting, observing signs of deepfake manipulation.","tags":[],"date_detected":null,"near_miss":null,"root_cause":null,"root_cause_detail":null,"failure_class_detail":null,"responsible_party":null,"adversarial_actor":"external_attacker","input_provenance":null,"time_to_contain":null,"operations_paused":null,"remediation":null,"precursor_events":null},"impact":{"direct_loss_usd":null,"remediation_hours":null,"records_exposed":null,"third_parties_affected_count":null,"severity":"moderate","severity_because":"Moderate test met: data or systems of others touched with a bounded scope stated (one victim, at least S$4.9 million lost).","harm_class":[],"affected_description":null,"protected_class_involved":null,"data_categories_exposed":[],"loss_range_usd":null,"reversibility":null,"downstream_exposure_count":null},"evidence":{"sources":[{"url":"https://www.straitstimes.com/singapore/victim-loses-at-least-4-9m-in-scam-involving-deepfakes-of-pm-wong-government-officials","publisher":"The Straits Times","date":"2026-05-14","type":"press","title":"Victim loses at least $4.9m in scam involving deepfakes of PM Wong, government officials - The Straits Times","archived_url":null,"attachment":"first_report","independence":"independent"},{"url":"https://sg.news.yahoo.com/victim-loses-least-4-9m-125500988.html","publisher":"Yahoo News Singapore","date":"2026-05-14","type":"press","title":"Victim loses at least $4.9m in scam involving deepfakes of PM Wong, government officials - Yahoo News Singapore","archived_url":null,"independence":"derivative"},{"url":"https://www.channelnewsasia.com/singapore/impersonation-scam-fake-zoom-meeting-footage-lawrence-wong-tharman-indranee-police-6125691","publisher":"CNA","date":"2026-05-16","type":"press","title":"Police obtain footage of fake Zoom meeting in scam impersonating PM Wong - CNA","archived_url":null}],"per_field_confidence":{"context.country":"C","event.adversarial_actor":"C","event.detection_method":"C","event.incident_class":"D","impact.severity":"D","impact.severity_because":"D","event.summary":"C","system.autonomy_level":"D","system.deployment_context":"D","event.trigger":"D","system.developer":"D","event.date_disclosed":"D","context.denominator_available":"D"},"field_citations":{"context.country":[{"source_index":2,"quote":"The Singapore Police Force has obtained footage of the AI-generated Zoom video conference that was part of a scam involving the impersonation of senior government officials, including Prime Minister Lawrence Wong, it said on Saturday (May 16)."}],"event.adversarial_actor":[{"source_index":0,"quote":"The ruse typically begins with fraudsters impersonating senior government officials and informing victims that they are to attend a virtual meeting with the President, ministers and other government officials."}],"event.detection_method":[{"source_index":0,"quote":"He later felt something was amiss and contacted Mr Wong Hong Kuan, at which point the victim realised that he had been scammed."}],"event.incident_class":[{"source_index":0,"quote":"The appearances of PM Wong and the officials were created using deepfake artificial intelligence technology."}],"impact.severity":[{"source_index":2,"quote":"One victim lost at least S$4.9 million (US$3.8 million) in what was purportedly funding assistance related to the Strait of Hormuz."}],"impact.severity_because":[{"source_index":2,"quote":"One victim lost at least S$4.9 million (US$3.8 million) in what was purportedly funding assistance related to the Strait of Hormuz."}],"event.summary":[{"source_index":0,"quote":"The appearances of PM Wong and the officials were created using deepfake artificial intelligence technology."},{"source_index":0,"quote":"After the meeting, the victim was contacted via WhatsApp and he then transferred the money through a series of transactions to a corporate bank account supplied by the scammers."},{"source_index":0,"quote":"He later felt something was amiss and contacted Mr Wong Hong Kuan, at which point the victim realised that he had been scammed."},{"source_index":2,"quote":"The Singapore Police Force has obtained footage of the AI-generated Zoom video conference that was part of a scam involving the impersonation of senior government officials, including Prime Minister Lawrence Wong, it said on Saturday (May 16)."}]},"notes_on_gaps":"No AI developer, model, or deployed system is named; the deepfake tools are not identified, so system fields are omitted. The scam involved no autonomous agent, so agent-related failure fields are omitted. The date of the incident is not stated in the sources. The disclosure date 2026-05-14 is the police advisory date given without a year; the year is taken from the article date. The loss is stated as at least S$4.9 million; the US$3.8 million figure is as stated by CNA and is treated as a floor, not an exact value. Severity 'moderate' is my judgement: one victim, bounded scope stated. Affected party count of 1 is taken from 'One victim'. No platform, company, or control that held, failed or was bypassed is named in the sources, so no links are recorded.
