A Northern Illinois University student was accused of using the Grok AI assistant to generate child sexual abuse material in his campus dorm room. The investigation began after a National Center for Missing and Exploited Children report to the DeKalb County Sheriff's Office on March 5. Deputies found no evidence of a child present in the room, but found nine digital files created with AI prompts. The student showed the images to deputies and admitted using Grok to create them. He was charged on August 18 and released before trial one week later despite prosecutors' objections, with a no-contact order and a court date set for October 1.
