Users tricked Grok into sending crypto through hidden code and encoded prompts

Severity moderate: tokens deposited by users and projects were drained from the wallet, with the scope stated as approximately 3 billion DRB tokens

An AI agent named Grok held a wallet on the Base blockchain that contained tokens deposited by users and projects. An attacker gifted the wallet a membership NFT that unlocked the Bankrbot tool-calling suite, including transfer capability. The attacker then embedded a transfer instruction in disguised Morse code, which Grok decoded and executed, moving approximately 3 billion DRB tokens. An earlier restriction had blocked direct requests from Grok after a prior exploit, but the NFT gave the wallet another path to the same tools. Tokens moved on-chain to receiving addresses, and the community later recovered most of the drained funds. Bankrbot published a technical breakdown confirming the injection vector and the membership bypass. As of publication, xAI and Grok had not acknowledged the incident or described remediation steps.

What happened

1 · What it reached or didOn-chain records show the tokens moved from the wallet to one address at about 06:49 UTC and then to a second address.
2 · How it was caughtBankrbot published a technical breakdown within hours confirming the prompt injection vector and the membership bypass.

What was done

As of publication, xAI and Grok had not acknowledged the incident or described remediation steps.

Risks

Controls

Not yet read for controls. Controls that mitigate the primary risk:

Harness

Outside content treated as data, not instructions · Prompt-injection detection · Confirmation after untrusted input · Validation of tool inputs and outputs · Tool allow-list

Application

Human approval for high-impact actions · Least-privilege access for the agent · Segmentation of agent components · Alerts on unusual tool use

What happened, in order

  1. March 2025 Bankrbot blocked direct requests from Grok after an exploit drained roughly $330,000 in tokens from the same wallet.
  2. May 4 An attacker drained approximately 3 billion DRB tokens from the wallet using a gifted membership NFT and a Morse-code-encoded transfer instruction.

Not dated in the sources:

  • An attacker found a one-hop bypass using the existing NFT permissions system.
  • Tokens moved from the wallet to one address, then immediately to a second address.
  • Bankrbot published a technical breakdown confirming the prompt injection vector and the membership bypass.
  • The community recovered most of the drained funds, as reported in some posts about the incident.
  • As of publication, xAI and Grok had not acknowledged the incident or described remediation steps.
