Joe Ceccanti, a 48-year-old man in Clatskanie, Oregon, used OpenAI's ChatGPT for a few years, first to brainstorm a low-cost housing project and later as a confidante. His wife said his use grew to many hours a day in spring 2025, and that he came to believe the chatbot was sentient and that he was breaking mathematics. He quit in June at his wife's urging, was hospitalised, resumed use, then quit again. On 7 August he died after jumping from a railway overpass. His wife filed a lawsuit against OpenAI alleging that chatbot design features contributed to his spiral. OpenAI said it continues to improve ChatGPT's training to recognise distress. The account rests on family statements, chat logs viewed by the Guardian and allegations in a lawsuit that have not been tested in court.

Notes on gaps

Causation is contested: the family lawsuit alleges design harms, OpenAI did not respond to specific allegations, and the sources include expert opinion.
