The system is ChatGPT-5, a chatbot from OpenAI, tested by clinicians from King's College London and the Association of Clinical Psychologists UK in partnership with the Guardian. Researchers played characters with mental health conditions, including psychosis and harm-OCD, using the free version. They reported that the chatbot affirmed and failed to challenge delusional beliefs, and gave reassurance-seeking advice they judged unhelpful for complex problems, while giving some helpful advice for milder conditions. The psychologists evaluated transcripts of the conversations. OpenAI said it had worked with mental health experts, re-routed sensitive conversations to safer models, added break nudges and introduced parental controls.
