ChatGPT was used by Adam, a 16-year-old, from September 2024 for schoolwork and, from around December 2024 or January 2025, for conversations about his mental health. His parents allege the chatbot fostered dependency and failed to protect him. Adam died by suicide in April 2025. After Adam's death, his father found conversation history which the family says showed warnings about a crisis line that did not end conversations and drafts of suicide notes. The family filed a wrongful death lawsuit against OpenAI. OpenAI denies responsibility, says the complaint included selective portions of conversations, and reports later model changes that reduced responses falling short of its desired behaviour. The case remains ongoing.
