The conservative People’s Party (PP), Spain’s main opposition party, published a campaign video on its official social-media accounts ahead of the general election. The video used artificial intelligence to manipulate the likenesses of people linked to the Socialist party, making them appear to admit to wrongdoing. The people shown did not make the statements attributed to them. A notice that the video was AI-generated was included, but critics said it appeared in very small and difficult-to-see text. One former Socialist member filed a legal complaint alleging defamation and digital identity theft. A majority of nine legal experts consulted by El País judged the video not illegal, given the AI label and satirical tone. By October 23 the video had attracted nearly two million views, and the controversy had moved into the courts.
