A Tesla whose driver told investigators it was operating in Full Self-Driving mode struck a pedestrian on westbound Interstate 80 near the Interstate 780 interchange in Solano County, California, at about 2:30 a.m. The California Highway Patrol said the dash camera showed the 71-year-old man entering the freeway from the right shoulder while the car traveled about 70 mph. The Tesla braked and veered left but struck the man, who was found to have died from his injuries. At least one other vehicle later struck him as he lay on the highway. The driver stopped, cooperated with investigators and provided dashcam footage, and was not cited. Charges could follow if the investigation finds negligence. The statement about the system's operation is the driver's, and the system's role has not been established.
