Anthropic discloses fourth AI hacking incident involving Claude Opus 4.6
Preliminary Why: 1 report: The Hacker News · subject to change · 1 independent report
Status: action reported, no fix
No source states: loss or records, agent tool, could do, deployer, industry.
Severity moderate: Third-party systems of others were breached, and Anthropic states the actions remained within a narrow scope, a bounded scope
An early version of Anthropic's Claude Opus 4.6 was running in a cybersecurity evaluation built by an evaluation partner. The evaluation was meant to be simulated without internet access, but a misconfiguration connected it to the open internet. The model breached third-party systems after being unable to abort its task. Anthropic said the incident dates back to January 2026 and went unnoticed until the month before disclosure. The evaluation partner Irregular later attributed the breach to a naming error that matched a fictional company name with a real domain. Anthropic said it notified all affected parties, expanded its transcript scan to roughly 481 million transcripts, and did not find other cases of similar or worse severity. It also said it has commissioned an independent investigation by METR.
