Two men were arrested in Haryana by Surat Cyber Crime Police over a fraud operation that used a deepfake video of Rajya Sabha MP Govindbhai Dholakia to promote buying old coins and currency notes. According to police, one accused used ChatGPT with publicly available footage and photographs to morph the video, replacing its audio with a voice-over. Fake Facebook profiles approached people with offers to buy old coins at high prices, and victims were asked to pay small fees through UPI. The case came to light after members of the public contacted Dholakia, and his organisation approached police; the complaint stated he was not involved. Police traced social media accounts, mobile numbers and transactions to the accused. Nine complaints on the national cybercrime portal were linked to ten bank accounts, with total reported fraud of about Rs 9.84 crore. Police are still investigating how many people were targeted.
