Severity major: Test met by a regulator involved: the Texas Attorney General opened an investigation into Meta's smart glasses. The investigation covers the devices generally and is not stated to be specific to this clip.

Meta's Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses include cameras and microphones that can capture photos, video and audio. A woman, Toluwa Omitowoju, said she learned that an interaction with a man wearing the glasses had been recorded and posted online without her knowledge. She estimated the clip received more than 200,000 views before it was removed. Omitowoju said she did not know she was being recorded and had not agreed to have the video posted. Meta says privacy and data protection are part of the design of its glasses, and that a recording light and software safeguards are intended to make recording visible. The Texas Attorney General opened an investigation in May that remains ongoing, and no finding that Meta violated state law has been announced.

Notes on gaps

The sources do not state the date the recording occurred or the date of disclosure, so no event dates are given. The 200,000 views figure is the complainant's estimate. The article is a press source and no implicated-party report was provided. The timeline dates for the 2024 settlement, May investigation and July Instagram statement are included as context only, and the undated incident is placed first because its order is not stated.
