Police in Newfoundland and Labrador say images of teenagers were altered using AI programs into explicit images. A group of teenagers filed a complaint in January with the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary, saying they were being exploited through images posted online. Police say the case involved computer forensics teams that traced the AI-created images back to their root source. The complaint led to a more than six-month investigation, and on July 29 nearly 60 criminal charges were filed against a 17-year-old from St. John's. Police say 19 people have been identified as allegedly exploited. Police describe the case as probably one of the first of its kind involving AI programs to create sexual exploitation material.
