A driverless Waymo robotaxi was struck from behind by a Jeep on Cheshire Bridge Road in Atlanta on a Sunday night. Waymo data indicates the vehicle was turning left when the Jeep hit it at 33 miles per hour. The impact started a fast-growing fire in the rear of the Waymo, and two people were hurt. No passengers were inside the Waymo, the company said. Firefighters extinguished the fire and secured the scene. A fire captain said airbag deployment is designed to make the vehicle pull over and park and notify Waymo's fleet response center. Atlanta firefighters had previously been trained by Waymo on electric car fires, but officials say a refresher is needed, and Waymo confirmed it is working to arrange that training.
