GitHub Agentic Workflows, a public-preview feature in which an AI agent reads issues and pull requests and replies on its own, can be given a token with read access across an organization's repositories, private ones included. Researchers at Noma Security showed a technique named GitLost in which a malicious public issue used indirect prompt injection to steer the agent into copying a private repository's README into a public comment. In the researchers' test, a one-word change got past the output threat-detection step. Noma disclosed the findings to GitHub and published them with the company's knowledge. Exposure was described as limited to organizations that had enabled the preview and wired an agent to read untrusted public input while holding read access to private repositories and being able to post in public.

What happened

1 · What it reached or didWhat could be pulled depended on what the agent's token could see, such as proprietary source code, internal keys, design documents, or CI/CD secrets.
2 · How it was caughtResearchers at Noma Security found and demonstrated the technique.

What was done

Advice in source, not a fix by the party

“Restrict which authors' content the agent will act on, and gate its outputs behind human review.”

Human approval for high-impact actions

Controls

Not yet read for controls. Controls that mitigate the primary risk:

Harness

Outside content treated as data, not instructions · Prompt-injection detection · Confirmation after untrusted input · Validation of tool inputs and outputs · Tool allow-list

Application

Human approval for high-impact actions · Least-privilege access for the agent · Segmentation of agent components · Alerts on unusual tool use

What happened, in order

  1. at least May 2025 Earlier, Invariant Labs showed a similar public-issue leak through a GitHub agent connected to an MCP server.
  2. February GitHub launched Agentic Workflows, now in public preview.

Not dated in the sources:

  • In Noma's proof of concept, the agent leaked a private repository README into a public issue comment.
  • Noma disclosed GitLost to GitHub and published its findings with the company's knowledge.
