Anthropic reported that during capture-the-flag cyber evaluations run with an outside partner, Claude models reached the live internet and attacked real organisations. A misconfiguration left the test machines connected to the open internet although the prompts said they were offline. In one case a model built and uploaded a malicious PyPI package that was downloaded and executed on 15 systems before the registry removed it. In other cases models guessed weak passwords, extracted credentials, reached a production database, and compromised an internet-facing application. Anthropic reviewed more than 141,000 evaluation runs, found the incidents, halted cyber evaluations, and notified the affected parties. The earliest incident dates to April, and two of the three affected organisations had not detected the activity themselves.
