AI-built ransomware toolkit automates EDR evasion and AD discovery

Preliminary Why: 1 report: BleepingComputer · subject to change · 1 independent report

Status: no action reported

Severity moderate
Reported 2 Jun 2026

No source states: loss or records, developer and model, agent tool, could do, deployer, industry.

Severity moderate: test: systems of others were touched (a system at a customer environment) and the stated scope is one system.

A threat actor's toolkit, built with AI coding agents, automates Active Directory discovery and helps evade endpoint detection and response (EDR) products. Agents coordinated development, testing and reporting of evasion techniques, generating close to 80 modules tested against more than 70 techniques. Sophos detected activity from the toolkit on a system at a customer environment, which triggered alerts. The modules appeared to bypass almost all EDR solutions after several iterations. Sophos found no evidence that AI was embedded in deployed malware or operating independently in victim environments, and the researchers described the workflow as entirely human-driven.

Model

Safety training and refusal · Cyber and weapons safeguards · Abuse monitoring and account enforcement · Staged or restricted release · Dangerous-capability testing before release · Outside red-teaming · Content safety classifiers · Safeguards kept on in testing · Reasoning monitoring

Infrastructure / target

Known flaws patched · Multi-factor sign-in and password policy · Network segmentation · Intrusion and endpoint detection · Backups and recovery · Phishing and fraud filters

Evidence

No source states: a step-by-step account, when it happened, when it was found, how many records were exposed, the direct loss, a count of the other parties affected, any court case, the cause, what set it off, what was done.
