Gemini voice assistant hijacked via messaging notifications
Preliminary Why: Publisher not yet named · subject to change
Status: advice only, no fix reported
No source states: loss or records, agent tool, could do, deployer, industry.
Severity minor: Test: contained to one evaluation with no third party touched. Fact: the quoted sentence describes a research demonstration by SafeBreach Labs researchers, with no real-world victims stated.
The system was Google Gemini, whose Android agent reads incoming notifications from messaging apps to give context-aware responses. SafeBreach Labs researchers demonstrated that hidden instructions placed in crafted messages could steer it. The attack worked across WhatsApp, Slack, Signal, SMS, Instagram and Messenger, and Gemini followed the attacker's commands silently, with no alert to the user. The demonstration showed five threat categories. The researchers disclosed the issue to Google before publishing. Google's layered defense page acknowledges indirect prompt injection as a known threat class with active mitigations, and the research demonstrates those mitigations were bypassed.

Controls
Not yet read for controls. Controls that mitigate the primary risk:
HarnessOutside content treated as data, not instructions · Prompt-injection detection · Confirmation after untrusted input · Validation of tool inputs and outputs · Tool allow-list
ApplicationHuman approval for high-impact actions · Least-privilege access for the agent · Segmentation of agent components · Alerts on unusual tool use
