Police in Ottawa charged two men after an investigation into the alleged use of AI to create deepfake images of women, taken from their social media profiles. The images placed the women's real faces into generated scenes of violence and sexual acts, and were shared online. The Ottawa Police Service said its investigation began after a report of a woman depicted in harmful online content, and a spokesperson said investigators found more than one possible victim across several jurisdictions. Documents before the court identify up to 25 alleged victims. The charges against one accused cover August 2020 to December 2025. Lowe was arrested in February and Van Beek about two and a half months later, and both remain in custody. The RCMP told victims that known distribution profiles had been removed and a main hosting website taken offline. These allegations have not been proven in court.

Notes on gaps

Dates of occurrence and disclosure are not stated as a single value (the charge period is given, and the CBC article date is not used as a disclosure date). The 2016 date and the month-only dates lack a stated year where the source gives none, so they are kept as stated. The up-to-25 figure is an upper bound from court documents; I used 25 as the stated count. Allegations are unproven; Lowe's involvement is contested by the charges only.
