A 76-year-old man in Belagavi was allegedly cheated of Rs 7.9 lakh in an online investment scam. The fraud used an AI-generated deepfake video that appeared to show Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman endorsing an investment scheme. The victim saw the video on YouTube, clicked a link in its description, and was later contacted on social media by a person who persuaded him to invest. A small initial investment appeared to earn profits, but when he tried to withdraw, he was asked to pay a 'customs duty' of Rs 4.2 lakh and then a further Rs 2 lakh before he realised he had been cheated. Police registered a case under the Information Technology Act on May 1 and are investigating. The police commissioner warned the public not to trust such videos.
