Avride operates autonomous robotaxi vehicles, including on Uber's platform in Dallas, Texas. In each case, the ADS was active while a human safety operator remained seated behind the wheel. The US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration opened an investigation after identifying 16 crashes of concern in which vehicles changed lanes into other vehicles or failed to avoid vehicles or objects. Some crashes caused property damage and one minor injury. A preliminary review of crash videos showed vehicles changing lanes into the path of others, failing to slow or stop for traffic ahead, and striking stationary objects partially blocking lanes. Avride said it has implemented targeted technical and operational mitigations to address findings from each reported incident. The investigation will assess the scope and severity of potential problems and the safeguards in place.

What happened

1 · What it was doingAvride robotaxis were offering passenger rides with the automated driving system active and a human safety operator seated behind the wheel.
2 · What went wrongThe vehicles executed lane changes into other vehicles and failed to avoid vehicles or objects in the road, resulting in crashes.
3 · How it was caughtThe US safety regulator's Office of Defects Investigation completed a preliminary review of video of each crash.
