A Christchurch man used AI apps downloaded to his two phones to create images and videos that superimposed children's faces onto adult bodies in sexual acts. The phones were left behind at home, and his partner at the time opened one, saw the material and went to police. A digital forensics unit identified 601 images and 29 videos as objectionable across the two devices. He was sentenced in the Christchurch District Court on two representative charges of knowingly making objectionable publications. The judge described the offending as promoting the sexual exploitation of children, and imposed 18 months in prison with leave to apply for home detention. The judge was not satisfied that child sex offender registration was appropriate. The judge noted there was no evidence the material had been distributed.

Notes on gaps

The sentence stating the material did not show a real child was not quoted verbatim because it contains embedded quote marks, so that fact is not recorded as a field.
