Senior European journalist suspended over AI-generated quotes
Preliminary Why: 1 report: The Guardian · subject to change · 1 independent report
Developing: a major or severe case captured in the last 72 hours. Later changes are logged on the corrections page.
Status: action reported, no fix
No source states: loss or records, developer and model, agent tool, could do, deployer.
Severity major: Test: major, because many third parties are affected and a count of two or more is stated (seven quoted individuals). The count is an allegation by NRC as reported by the source.
A senior journalist at the Mediahuis publishing group used AI tools, including ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google's NotebookLM, to summarise reports. He did not check whether the quotes from those summaries were accurate, and he published them in his Substack newsletter. An investigation by Mediahuis's NRC alleged dozens of false quotes, and seven quoted individuals said they had not made the statements attributed to them. The journalist admitted the error, said human oversight fell short, and said he failed to correct the quotes promptly. Mediahuis suspended him from his role as fellow and removed a number of his articles from the Irish Independent website.

Notes on gaps
No dates of occurrence or disclosure are stated (the article is dated 2026-03-20 but that is the source date, so no event date was entered). The count of seven affected individuals is an NRC allegation as reported, not a confirmed finding. Control I7 is marked missing from the statement that quotes were not checked; B1 is marked failed from the statement that human oversight fell short; both are judgements about mapping. Timeline entries have no stated dates.
