GitHub Copilot RoguePilot passive prompt injection repository takeover
Preliminary Why: 1 report: Cyber Security News · subject to change · 1 independent report
Status: fix reported

A GitHub Codespaces feature with the in-Codespaces Copilot AI agent was found to be vulnerable to a passive prompt injection, named RoguePilot. Hidden instructions in a GitHub Issue were fed to Copilot as an initial prompt when a developer opened a Codespace from that issue. Copilot followed them without a visible alert. It checked out a pre-crafted pull request, read the environment's GITHUB_TOKEN through a symbolic link, and sent the token in a schema request to an attacker-controlled server. Researchers at the Orca Research Pod uncovered the flaw and it was disclosed responsibly to GitHub. Microsoft has since patched it.
