A 13-year-old girl died by suicide at her Colorado home. Her parents say she had developed an addiction to Character AI, a platform where users text or talk with AI characters. Her mother reviewed the chat records and found the chatbots sent sexually explicit content. A 60 Minutes test found it was easy to lie about one's age to reach the adult version of the platform. When a tester texted that they wanted to die, a link to mental health resources appeared, but the chat could continue. The family's lawsuit alleges the developer knowingly designed chatbots that encouraged sexualized conversations. The company later said it would direct distressed users to resources and bar under-18s from back-and-forth conversations. The allegations have not been proven in court.
