University of Hong Kong professor steps down after AI-generated fake citations
Preliminary Why: Publisher not yet named · subject to change
Status: action reported, no fix
No source states: loss or records, developer and model, agent tool, could do, deployer.
Severity minor: Test applied: minor (contained to one evaluation, routine cleanup, no third party touched). The source names one paper, one journal and one retraction request, and states no count of affected parties, no regulator and no unbounded scope.
A University of Hong Kong investigation found that a paper by a PhD student contained non-existent references generated by artificial intelligence. The paper, titled "Forty years of fertility transition in Hong Kong", was published in China Population and Development Studies in October. The university said the AI-generated citations had not been disclosed by the student. According to the journal, the article was retracted on Monday. The university took disciplinary action: the corresponding author, Professor Paul Yip, stepped down as associate dean of the faculty of social sciences and from research committees, and the student is subject to disciplinary procedures. The corresponding author has also requested retraction. HKU said it would strengthen mandatory training and assessment for researchers on AI use in academic research.

Notes on gaps
The disclosure date 2025-12-17 is an inference: the university announced findings on Wednesday, and the article is dated 2025-12-17, which is a Wednesday. The university's vow to strengthen training is reported as a stated plan, not a change made, so no remediation entry is given.
