A bankruptcy judge reprimanded a former senior counsel at Gordon Rees Scully Mansukhani for filings containing AI-generated fake citations in the bankruptcy of Jackson Hospital & Clinic in the Middle District of Alabama. The sources do not name the AI tool used by counsel. The problem surfaced when Jackson Hospital and its lender accused the firm and counsel of submitting fabricated information, and the court also found misleading and fabricated citations. Before the show cause hearing, the firm reimbursed more than $55,000 in legal fees to the opposing firms. The firm was not sanctioned, but it must give its attorneys the opinion and its updated AI and citation-checking policies. Gordon Rees said it had expanded AI-related training and adopted a cite checking policy in September.
